You were there from the beginning.  I didn’t see it, but you were there.  Waiting for me to notice………..to open my eyes to the gift that I was being given.  I wasn’t aware it was a gift for me…………one to have and to hold,  in sickness and in health.

I was scared of the gift……….maybe it wasn’t the right time to accept, maybe it wouldn’t last, maybe it was just wrong.

It is important for everyone to take good care of him/herself.  But for those of us with chronic illnesses, it is vitally important.  Our days can be are filled with pain, discomfort, anxiety, loneliness, sadness, brain fog, confusion, appointments, and the fear of the unknown.  It is a lot for one person to handle and because of this, self-care is something that needs to be high on every CI persons’ list.

When I find a saying that speaks to me, I like to write it down on an index card and place it in a location where I will see it often, like at my kitchen window.  Who doesn’t need daily inspiration?

Gratitude journal

Gratitude can be a very difficult thing to find when you are having one of those horribly bad days.  You know the ones, lying in bed, feeling as if you are going to die – any moment.  This makes it tough, even for the most grateful people to start listing blessings.

So, here is another action step you can take.  Find a notebook or anything you can scribble in and spend the next 30 days writing down at least one thing for which you are grateful.  I have been doing this for over 30 days now and it has been helpful and comforting for me.  I have to admit, on some days it has been much harder to think of something to write down.  But, there have been days that I was able to list multiple things I was thankful for and it is uplifting to go back and re-read these long entries.  In those very down and difficult moments, it can bring you hope to see that not every day will be this bad.

You CAN do this!  It doesn’t take too much energy or brain power, both of which I know are in short supply.  Just try to do it every day for at least 30 days.  Keep the notebook by your bed so it is easy to access in the morning or evening (or during the day) and list what you can.  You may surprise yourself on how many things you still, in all of this chaos, have to be grateful!
